History

Our church was founded in 1896. At that time the church met in the Old Greenwood School, not far from its present site. The founding members' families are still well represented today. Our pews boast several generations of those families every Sunday morning. Eden is part of a two church charge that includes Bethesda United Methodist Church, located in the Lamar community. The church building has been improved over the years with brick exterior,  additional classrooms and renovation to the sanctuary. Latest improvements on our old church building include the steeple, landscaping and new roofing. In June 2004, construction was started on a new building at the old church's location. Construction was completed on our new building (Feb. 2004).  It has plenty of Sunday school classes, an office for the Pastor, is handicap accessible, a new sound system, a new security system and best of all a beautiful sanctuary with plenty of comfortable seats. The sanctuary is built with a theater like floor and the stage is up high. Both work together so everyone can have a great view. We also have a balcony for those special Sundays like homecoming when we have big crowds. The huge stained glass window  placed at the front of the sanctuary is in memory of Justin Huffine, the late son of Katie and Dennis Huffine. In summer 2005 we installed a fenced-in playground. As of June 2008, an entire new projector system was installed and fully working.  Our dreams for the future are to build a fellowship hall and a Sunday school wing.  At Eden we are always looking to the future until He returns...

Just A Few of the Favorite Programs:

Sunday Morning Prelude: Come, prepare and get into the right frame of mind before Sunday School starts. Take time to chat  with visitors and  fellow brothers and sisters. Catch up on the latest  announcements. This starts at  9:45 A.M

Sunday Morning Worship: Come and worship and praise God with prayer, song, meditation, giving and study. This is a Holy time in which your soul can find nourishment, healing and peace. Also you can leave your burdens here and be uplifted by God's Holy Spirit, ready to go and spread the Good News and let your candle shine in a lost world. Worship starts at 11:00A.M. and finishes around  noon.

Nursery: To benefit all of the parents in the congregation, there is nursery every Sunday for infants and toddlers. Your kids will enjoy a safe environment, a snack, and activities while you enjoy morning worship.

Wednesday  Night Bible Study: Do you want to increase your knowledge of the Lord? There is no better place to be on Wednesday  night than with a group of brothers and sisters exchanging ideas and opinions about different topics in the Bible. Our study starts at 7:00 P.M.

Sunday Evening Worship: Here small groups do different study series. Most recently we are doing an individualized study of different Bible characters. You should join us!

Eden Youth: The Youth meet every Sunday afternoon at 5 P.M. See the Youth page for more info. on activities!

United Methodist Women: This very special Christian group has a strong outreach ministry for the community. Women of all ages share in study and special service to the Lord. The Eden United Methodist Women meet socially on the second Monday evening of each month in member's homes.

Adult Choir: If you like music or like to sing, then our choir is for you. There is special music throughout the year including holidays and other special services. The Eden Adult Choir meets every Sunday at 6 P.M.

Praise Team: We have a praise team that leads us in worship every other Sunday morning. For those who enjoy a more contemporary service, this is for you. They lead us in a variety of praise and worship songs.

Tape Ministry: Several shut-ins and other members of Eden's congregation who are ill or out of town do not miss the Sunday morning sermons because of this ministry. Tapes are made, duplicated and delivered by dedicated members.

Annual Ice Cream Supper:This fun event has been a community wide tradition since the early 1900's. Enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, cake walks, cake auctions and plenty of fresh homemade ice cream.  What's your favorite flavor? We always have several to choose from. The proceeds for this event go toward the Eden building fund. The ice cream supper is held annually the first Saturday in August.

Buffalo Mountain Weekend Retreat: This is another Eden tradition. Just a short drive into the beautiful East Tennessee mountains, is the site of our annual Youth and Family Retreat. This is where we camp on Friday and Saturday night, hike to the waterfalls, do craft workshops,  play volleyball , go kayaking, do a talent show, sing campfire music, and have special worship services. This retreat will serve to help our church family grow closer to one another and renew our personal relationships with the Lord.

Christmas Caroling: This tradition is for those who have lots of Christmas spirit (or for someone who wants to get some). We take fruit baskets to shut-ins and sing old and new Christmas songs. It's great fun and even though it's always cold, Christmas caroling will warm your heart and soul and bring plenty of smiles!
